Kyushu Specialty Products Feature

Oita Prefecture

The 110th Onsen Festival will be held in Beppu, Oita from April 1~7. It is a festival to give thanks for the blessings of the rich hot springs of Beppu. During the festival, many public hot springs in the city are open to the public for free, portable shrines from hot spring shrines are carried out to the main streets, and the flames of the Ogiyama Fire Festival are lit on Mt. Ohira, lighting the evening sky. In the spring, if you are in Oita you must try the outdoor Jigokumushi hot spring restaurant and local ‘Toriten’ dishes, so be sure to come and try!

Kumamoto Prefecture

Kumamoto prefecture is a tourist destination that can be easily reached by flights from Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya or Okinawa. Its beautiful nature, rich gourmet dining, relaxing hot springs and historical locations all make it an attractive destination. Nagasaki Prefecture

Nagasaki is currently undergoing big “once in a century” changes, including the opening of a new bullet train line to the Nagasaki Stadium City Project. Nagasaki is notable for being the origin place of castella, developed from contact with early contact with the Portuguese. This familiar Japanese sweet has a history of four hundred years and is loved by people of all ages, all year round.

Saga Prefecture

Saga Prefecture is the center of western Kyushu. It features good access to both Fukuoka and Nagasaki, and has beautiful natural surroundings, being blessed by the sea, mountains, and hot springs, and it also has lots of delicious food! Saga’s famous spring event is the Arita Pottery Market. Finding your favorite amongst the many bowls is like a treasure hunt. Spring is also the season for cherry blossoms. Ogi Park, home to around 3,000 cherry blossom trees, is one of Japan’s top 100 cherry blossom viewing spots.

Fukuoka Prefecture

As the sun goes down, liquor shops in Kitakyushu begin “Kakuuchi”. Kitakyushu is said to be the origin place of Kakuuchi, a system in which drinks can be consumed directly after they are purchased in liquor stores, and after purchasing your preferred beverage by volume, you will receive the store’s locally prepared snacks either for free or at a low price. Although such liquor shops are small, you can enjoy chatting with other customers shoulder to shoulder. Every shop has its own different atmosphere, so you are sure to want to try out several!
