Kagoshima Prefecture

In Kagoshima Prefecture, you’ll find Yakushima, the first site in Japan to be designated a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in 1993, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in December 2023. Additionally, there’s the Amami Oshima, Tokunoshima, Northern Okinawa Island, and Iriomote Island, which were registered as World Natural Heritage Sites in 2021. The prefecture also boasts Tanegashima, home to JAXA’s rocket launch site and space center, among many other fascinating islands. Be sure to visit and explore these captivating destinations.

Takachiho Gorge features towering cliffs approximately 80 to 100 meters high that stretch for about 7 kilometers. This magnificent valley was created by the erosion of pyroclastic flows from Mount Aso’s volcanic activity by the Gokase River, making it one of Japan’s most iconic scenic spots shaped by nature. The highlight of this area is the “Manai Waterfall,” designated as one of Japan’s top 100 waterfalls. Enjoy the summer’s power spots and the serene beauty of this natural wonder.
