The mountain scenery of Kirishima changes with the seasons: pink Kyushu azalea in spring, the vibrant green of summer, the red and yellow foliage of autumn, and the white hoarfrost of winter. The fishing ban on Japanese spiny lobster is lifted every year on September 1st! To celebrate, restaurants and hotels in Nichinan City hold the “Nichinan Coast Spiny Lobster Festival,” where visitors can enjoy spiny lobster at special prices. Japanese spiny lobster is a luxury ingredient that cannot be farmed. Simple dishes such as sashimi, salt-grilled lobster, or lobster miso soup are recommended to savor the lobster’s natural flavor.

In addition, “Seki mackerel,” one of Oita Prefecture’s signature ingredients, comes into season in December, allowing visitors to enjoy its plump texture and melt-in-your-mouth flavor.
