Kyushu consists of seven prefectures: Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Oita, Miyazaki, and Kagoshima.
Each area has its own charms to be experienced, from distinctive food culture, attractive sightseeing spots, spectacular natural beauty, relaxing hot spring towns, unique souvenirs, and more! In this special feature, we will be introducing appealing goods from Kyushu. Please take your time and enjoy looking through these products.
Kagoshima Prefecture
Kirishima’s beautiful scenery and natural environment make it one of Kagoshima Prefecture’s leading tourist destinations, along with Ibusuki and Kagoshima City. Many visitors come to the area for its hot springs. The mountain scenery of Kirishima changes with the seasons: pink Kyushu azalea in spring, the vibrant green of summer, the red and yellow foliage of autumn, and the white hoarfrost of winter. Kirishima Jingu Shrine was designated a National Treasure in 2022. Be sure to visit and experience the beauty of Kirishima for yourself!
Miyazaki Prefecture
The fishing ban on Japanese spiny lobster is lifted every year on September 1st! To celebrate, restaurants and hotels in Nichinan City hold the “Nichinan Coast Spiny Lobster Festival,” where visitors can enjoy spiny lobster at special prices. Japanese spiny lobster is a luxury ingredient that cannot be farmed. Simple dishes such as sashimi, salt-grilled lobster, or lobster miso soup are recommended to savor the lobster’s natural flavor.
Oita Prefecture
Oita, the “Onsen Prefecture”, is full of attractions in autumn as well! Futago-ji Temple, located halfway up Mt. Futago, which towers over the center of the Kunisaki Peninsula, is surrounded by lush nature and has been selected as one of Japan’s 100 best forests for “forest bathing.” It becomes especially popular with visitors during the autumn foliage season.
In addition, “Seki mackerel,” one of Oita Prefecture’s signature ingredients, comes into season in December, allowing visitors to enjoy its plump texture and melt-in-your-mouth flavor.
Kumamoto Prefecture
Kumamoto Prefecture’s cuisine combines rich ingredients with traditional techniques, offering a dining experience that satisfies both body and soul. Kumamoto ramen is known for its rich, flavorful broth and firm noodles, delivering a taste so unforgettable that you’ll crave it after just one try. Horse meat sashimi, a local specialty, is characterized by its tender texture and refined flavor. The region is also famous for its Akaushi (red beef), where you can enjoy juicy, high-quality lean cuts of meat.
Nagasaki Prefecture
From the opening of the new bullet train line to the Nagasaki Stadium City Project, Nagasaki is undergoing a series of once-in-a-century transformations.
Nagasaki, the birthplace of Castella cake: A local specialty with a history of over 400 years, Castella cake is a Japanese adaptation of a European confection brought by the first Western visitors to Japan. This well-loved traditional sweet is popular across all ages and is available year-round.
Huis Ten Bosch: One of the world’s largest “Kingdoms of Light,” this popular spot features Japan’s first-ever three-story merry-go-round.
Saga Prefecture
The Saga International Balloon Festival, held in Saga City from October 31st to November 4th, offers visitors the serene sight of colorful balloons gently floating through the autumn sky. At the same time, the magnificent Karatsu Kunchi Festival takes place in nearby Karatsu City. Beautiful autumn foliage is also at its peak at places like the Karatsu Forest of Environmental Art. Come and experience the beauty of autumn in Saga Prefecture for yourself!
Fukuoka Prefecture
“Itoshima Oyster Huts”
Oysters are cultivated in different parts of the sea, resulting in varying flavors depending on the region, even within Itoshima. Come and experience the unique taste of each oyster for yourself!
